 9 Blunders that make a Recruiter Lose Interest in You

We all know that the relationship between a recruiter and their candidate is a dependent one – The candidate needs help throughout the recruitment process and the recruiter, to satisfy their client as well as bring home the bacon. However, just because one depends on the other does not mean that one cannot lose interest in another.

Yes, candidates can always go the job search alone – but what happens when it comes to sitting an interview and you’ve had no one to prepare with but yourself? Wouldn’t you like professional help when it comes to the next step or indeed the first step in your career whether it be at home or abroad?

At the same time – Recruiters don’t have to work with every candidate that comes their way – you may be putting bread on the table after the recruiter has successfully placed you but recruiters can afford to be picky in today’s competitive & multilingual market.

With that in mind, there are 9 Big Jobseeker Blunders that will without a doubt make a Careertrotter recruiter lose interest in you!


  • Being Rude Over the Phone

When we call, it is usually to get an update on your current situation – to get to know you and what it is you are looking for in a new language job, a new location and what type of company you would like to work for. When we hear ‘’I don’t have time for this’’ or another one we have received ‘’Make it quick, I’m busy’’ we can lose interest fairly quickly. If you didn't have the time - why did you apply?

No one likes to be spoken to in this way -  we are taking the time to get to know you and when you are on the job search for a multilingual job abroad can you really afford to be this rude?

  • Asking for the Job Spec First

‘’What kind of job do you have for me?’’ Something we recruiters are used to hearing and the answer isn’t always black and white. We could have a number of different multilingual opportunities open to you and that is why we want to talk with you.
No, we cannot send you the job spec first as this would be pointless for both of us. We like to talk through the location, the recommended savings needed to relocate there, the company and then of course the language job itself. Take the 10 minutes to speak with us you’ll be glad you did

  • Take Take Take 

Want to rub a recruiter the wrong way? Here is a sure-fire way to make a recruiter lose interest in you. Ask for everything there is on the language job, the country and the company but offering up nothing in return. The main reason we ask you questions is so we can come back with a multilingual job that would truly interest you. When we ask about salary expectations we are not nosy -we just need to make sure we don't come back to you with a language job and a salary that you would have no interest in - Doing this wastes both your time and the recruiters time.

We work together - it's a give and takes relationship.

  • Call me over the weekend

This is something we get asked on a regular basis – but what multilingual jobseekers need to remember is that recruiters have a life too. We work every hour we can, nearly 50 hours a week, more if needed. But in order to help you, we too need a good work-life balance. Asking us to take some of our own precious time to call you is quite inconsiderate and will have us lose interest in you. We do understand you are busy and finding time can be hard but it is 10 minutes to help you further your multilingual career abroad.

  • R-E-S-P-E-C-T - No Respect

No one likes when they are disrespected - same goes for recruiters - we don't have a coat of armour protecting us from nasty and insensitive comments. This is one of the biggest things that will make one of our recruiters lose interest in you - who wants to help someone who has shown them no respect? Such an example? When a job seeker emails with no greeting, no introduction just plain and simple ''Call me Now!''. Sorry, Pal, you won't be getting a call - if you had perhaps told us in advance that you would available around a certain time on a specific day then we would have no problem scheduling a call with you. Manners Cost Nothing. 

  • A Profile is Not a CV

We love it when a candidate sends us their CV – it cuts our search in half and gives us more time to help you and others find a multilingual job abroad. What will make us lose interest though is when someone sends us a profile – talking about their skills and how they use their skills. A profile is not a CV – we need previous employer’s names – how long you worked there and experienced gained – not forgetting languages spoken of course. It is up to us to determine what skills there are from your CV so save yourself the hassle – Just send us your CV.

  • Sloppy CV’s

When we get CV’s in with many grammar mistakes, wrong dates and very little detail and order – we can lose interest very quickly. Especially when we get a CV in that says ‘’Excellent attention to detail’’ and a number of misspelt words directly under that.

Proofreading your CV doesn’t take long – pop it in Microsoft Word and do a quick spell check and ask a family member or friend to have a look for you. Mistakes can happen but not again and again.

  • Terrible Timekeeping

Missed a call from us? That’s no problem, we will have sent you an email and/or a voicemail saying that we rang and asking you to get back to us as soon as possible.

What makes us lose interest is if we have scheduled a call with you and you don’t pick up and never get back to us – this shows poor timekeeping. Again, we know life is unpredictable and things can pop up out of the blue – the only thing we ask is that you let us know that you are unavailable at that time and to send us the time you are next free for a call. This keeps our interest and we’re happy to reschedule.

  • Be realistic – Do your own research

Nothing peeves a Careertrotter Recruiter off more than a multilingual jobseeker that hasn’t done their research on what it may be like to live and work abroad in a specific country, especially when they have never worked there before. You will need to research the general cost of living to give yourself an idea of what sort of salary expectation to have. Don’t forget that each country may have a different currency so when we talk about working in Krakow – converting the salary is pointless as you will be paid in Zloty.

The pay scale can vary from country to country and this is because of the cost of living is different from country to country and even city to city. You could have the exact same multilingual job in Dublin and in Cork but the Salary but be different due to cost of living. What we would like is for you to keep this mind.

Be realistic too – It’s great you have a 3rd level degree but with no experience, there isn’t 1 senior role out there for you. You will need to start from the bottom and work your way up. Having a 3rd level degree is not a guarantee to a higher salary – keep this in mind.
